The book “Point-of-Care Ultrasound for Nursing,” edited by Prof. Masaru Matsumoto, was published on August 30, 2024.

Ultrasound has become the “sixth tool” in the physical assessment conducted by nurses. The small, lightweight, and easy-to-use “pocket ultrasound” has made significant advancements, offering clearer images and AI-assisted image interpretation functions. Whether in hospitals or at home, nurses now have the opportunity to master the use of pocket ultrasound, much like a stethoscope, to enhance the level of care they provide. The book is packed with nursing care practices using ultrasound, including the assessment of urinary retention, constipation, pressure ulcers, swallowing disorders, and lymphedema, as well as confirming peripheral venous catheter insertion and nasogastric tube placement. It provides specific examples of how nurses use ultrasound in various care settings, what can be achieved, and the potential it holds for improving care.
